City Proclaims Silicon Space Day

Wednesday, February 25, 2004 - San Diego City Councilwoman and Deputy Mayor Toni Atkins proclaimed today “Silicon Space Day” in the City’s District Three with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception held in the firm’s new offices at the Regional Transportation Center, 4001 El Cajon Boulevard.

With co-sponsors from the City of San Diego and the San Diego Council of AeA, San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation (EDC) CEO Julie Meier Wright presided over the festivities, presenting Silicon Space CEO Curt Nelson with a plaque welcoming the firm to Mid-City. Wright also unveiled a new advertising campaign promoting Mid-City and featuring a quote from Silicon Space COO Kevin Harris.

Kevin Carroll, Executive Director of AeA, praised Silicon Space’s involvement in the overall issues of the high tech industry. CEO Nelson is immediate past Chair of the AeA San Diego Council.

Caridad Sanchez, Senior Community Representative from the Office of Congresswoman Susan Davis, presented Nelson with an official proclamation declaring Silicon Space to be “at the forefront of innovation.”

Toni Atkins welcomed over 80 guests. VIPs in attendance included EDC Board Members Bill Geppert of Cox Communications, Vince Mudd of San Diego Office Interiors, and Bob Watkins of R.J. Watkins; Captain Basil Gray of the Navy’s SPAWAR; Hank Cunningham of the City’s Economic Development Department; Tim Cooper of Reed Elsevier/Harcourt; Jeff Marston of Marston + Marston; and Rear Admiral (Ret) Steve Johnson.

Silicon Space CEO Nelson thanked EDC, AeA, and the City, crediting EDC for their assistance in Silicon Space’s decision to relocate to Mid-City. “We were looking for a place with the energy that comes from diversity, a central location for easy access, great restaurants, and free parking,” Nelson said.

He then presented Neighborhood House Association – Headstart, Urban Village, Center Director Vestra Ash with a $500 donation to kick-off Silicon Space’s corporate citizenship in their new neighborhood.

Following the ceremony, guests toured Silicon Space’s new offices, reviewing the firm’s work with clients including Disney, HP, Harcourt, Urban Acupuncture, Intel, EDC, PenChecks, Cohn & Wolfe, and the United States Navy.

“Today is a good day for Mid-City,” said Atkins, “Welcome Silicon Space!”
